There is currently widespread concern among researchers in debating questions that generate ethical conflicts within the scope of health care geared to the human being in the terminal phase, especially euthanasia, dysthanasia and orthothanasia. This study sought to characterize the scientific production at the national level on euthanasia, dysthanasia and orthothanasia. It involves an integrative review of the literature. The study universe consisted of 41 publications related to the theme in question by means of a survey conducted online in the Virtual Health Library in the Capes Portal and in the Bioethical Magazine. Of these, 25 articles comprised the sample taking into consideration the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection occurred in March 2013, by means of an instrument containing information pertinent to the proposed objective. The key words used were euthanasia, dysthanasia and orthothanasia. With respect to the focus of the publications, three themes emerged: Theme I - Euthanasia; Theme II - Dysthanasia and Theme III - Orthothanasia. The studies analyzed reflected the current concern in terms of ethical dilemmas concerning care of the human being in the end of life phase. Thus, it is hoped that this research can contribute to bolster the critical reading with respect to the theme.

Objective: To investigate the perception of nurses in relation to concepts of communication to the terminal patient and the strategies adopted by them to communicate with the patient in the terminally ill. Methods: Qualitative research, conducted with seven nurses in the intensive care unit of a public health hospital in the city of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba. The data were collected in recorded interviews, from December 2011 to January 2012, and subjected to content analysis technique. Results: The identified categories were: Perception of nurses about communication with the terminal patient and strategies adopted by nurses for a good communication with the terminal patient. Such categories indicated that the professionals start to value the communication in clinical practice, using it as a strategy to assist the care to the terminally ill patient. Conclusion: this study is expected to subsidize new investigations, because they are still incipient to the research that addresses the communication on patient terminal care.

The sexuality of elderly women with urinary incontinence has become a research problem because it is affected by the appearance of psycho-emotional problems which limit daily life activities and social interaction, reducing the quality of life of these people. The objective of this research was to investigate the online national scientific production regarding the sexuality of elderly women with urinary incontinence. For that purpose, an integrative review of the literature was made on the Virtual Health Library website, using the descriptors: “sexuality”, “urinary incontinence” and “elderly”. Articles corresponding to the period from 2007 to 2013 were selected and data were collected between September and October 2014. The works matching the eligibility criteria were integrally read and the data were analyzed qualitatively through the categorical thematic analysis. The sample consisted of thirteen articles. Based on the data, it was noticed that two thematic categories were listed: the repercussions of urinary incontinence on the sexuality of the elderly and the limitations on the quality of life of incontinent elderly women. Thus, in conclusion, the empirical results obtained through this study represent important subsidies for the planning and implementation of interventions in order to improve life conditions and sexuality wellbeing of incontinent elderly women.

Objectives: To characterize the scientific production on communication in palliative care published in online journals in the period 2006-2011, as well as to investigate the contributions of communication as a therapeutic approach for palliative care in terminal patients. Material and Methods: This is an integrative literature review based on searches on the databases: Latin America and Caribbean Literature of Information in Health Sciences (LACLIHS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Brazilian Database of Nursing (BDN). For data collection, the descriptors “communication and palliative care” were used. The sample was composed of sixteen publications. Results: The analysis of the publications made possible to identify two thematic categories – “Communication in palliative care: care instrument with the terminal patient”; and “Communication Strategies used in the care of the terminal patient”. Conclusion: It was found that the number of publications highlighting this theme is considered incipient. However, communication in palliative care is an essential tool for the promotion of palliative care in this stage of life. Thus, this study has raised innovative perceptions concerning the use of communication in relation to the care procedures, which may benefit the inclusion of this content in the curricula of health professionals. DESCRIPTORS: Communication. Palliative Care. Health.
