This study describes the relationship between nursing doctoral dissertations and research lines defined by the Brazilian Nursing field in three areas: professional, care and organizational. It isa descriptive-exploratory research, based on reports of Graduate Programs evaluated by CAPES and on The Informative Guide of Nursing Research and Researchers CEPEn/ ABEn, from 1983 to 2001, totalling 448 abstracts. The care field includes the greatest production, followed by the organizational and professional areas. The studies disclose tendency towards the qualitative approach revealing possibilities for a more profound knowledge about reality or a more through understanding of social phenomena related to nursing practice. On the other hand, studies on interventions in professional practice and technological development are still under construction.

This study aimed to present the trajectory of doctoral education in nursing in Brazil from 1981 to 2004. A descriptive and analytical study was carried out, using documents available at the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education, a body responsible for the recognition, evaluation and coordination of graduate studies in Brazil. Data analysis revealed that there are 13 doctoral courses in nursing, most of which are concentrated in the Southeast (69.2%), and that teaching and scientific production have been influenced by demographic and epidemiological transitions and by historical, social and political movements. Knowledge production is related to Nursing Care, Health Management and Practices and Theoretical Foundations of Care. Doctoral programs have prepared leaders in the fields of education, research and public policy development, in health institutions as well as in public policies, health institutions and governmental entities. This study aimed to present the trajectory of doctoral education in nursing in Brazil from 1981 to 2004. Resumen Keywo rds : Woman’s Health. Nursing. Episiotomy. Palabras clave: Salud de la Mujer. Enfermería. Episiotomía. REALIZAÇÃO DA EPISIOTOMIA NOS DIAS ATUAIS À LUZ DA PRODUÇÃO CIENTÍFICA: UMA REVISÃO Realization of the episiotomy in the current days to the light of the scientific production: A revision Realización de la episiotomía en los días actuales a luz de la producción científica: Una revisión Paulo Alexandre de Souza São Bento Rosangela da Silva Santos A episiotomia é um procedimento cirúrgico realizado no períneo da mulher no momento do parto, feita por obstetras e enfermeiros obstetras. Episiotomy is a surgical procedure conducted by obstetricians and obstetrical nurses on the female perineum at the time of delivery. This procedure is adopted as routine in obstetrics, and its practice is currently being questioned. The present study was conducted beginning with bibliographical research of the scientific production regarding episiotomy. The bibliographical research for the present study was done with the help of search tools at the LILACS database. 60 studies were found, of which 22 specific papers on episiotomy, referring to the 1980s, 1990s and the period from 2000 to 2005, were analyzed. Discussions on the subject matter dealt with the study characteristics, the professional conducting the procedure and the manner of study of this procedure. Research indicates the majority of studies on episiotomy were done by doctors, whose main concern appears to be the technical and scientific aspects of the subject matter. This reflects a Cartesian background with a biological focus, as well as a political vision of feminine health, as a rule considering women reproductive beings whose most relevant roles are those connected to domestic, child-rearing activities, all inA episiotomia e um procedimento cirurgico realizado no perineo da mulher no momento do parto, feita por obstetras e enfermeiros obstetras.
